About this tour

Forty minutes from Bishkek, and the only thing on the path ahead of you is the river.

Alamedin Gorge is 35 km from Bishkek — about 40 minutes by road. It is wider and greener than its famous neighbour, and far less visited.

From the parking area the walk is 5 km each way along the river, medium difficulty, 5 to 6 hours in total including stops. Bring a snack: once you leave the car there is nowhere to buy anything.

In July there are wild strawberries along the trail. Most people drive past the turning without knowing it is there.

The quieter valley

Alamedin starts where Ala-Archa does but runs further east, and it looks quite different: wider, greener, with open slopes instead of walls of spruce. It is 35 km from Bishkek and takes about 40 minutes to reach, which makes it the easiest real mountain valley to get to from the city.

It is also the one most visitors never hear about. Where Ala-Archa has a car park, a ranger post and a steady flow of day trippers, Alamedin has a track, a river and wild strawberries along the path in July.

The walk

From the parking area the trail runs about 5 km up the valley, following the river the whole way. It is rated medium difficulty and the round trip takes 5–6 hours at a comfortable pace with stops. There is no scrambling and no exposure — it is simply a long, steady walk on a good path.

The reward is the upper valley: meadows, juniper, the river running white over rock, and the snow line visible ahead of you. Bring a snack; there is nowhere to buy anything once you leave the car.

When to come

June to September is the sweet spot, when the meadows are in flower and the strawberries are out. May is green and empty but the river runs high. October is clear and cold and very beautiful. In deep winter the upper trail is snowbound, though the lower valley stays walkable.

Alamedin pairs naturally with Ala-Archa if you have two days and want to see both sides of the same range.
